Performance issue with Shared Dataset and Embedded Dataset on SSRS 2008 R2 integrated with Sharepoint 2010

Hi,

I am very new to SSRS integrated with Sharepoint having worked with SSRS 2005 for a while.

I am trying to understand a performance problem with some reports published on our Sharepoint site using a shared dataset.

If I embed the dataset into the report it runs almost instantly (a couple of seconds at most). As soon as I convert the dataset to a shared dataset the reports take minutes to load but it does run. Even if I cache the dataset the performance is still lousy and there doesn't seem to be any noticeable difference.

Are there any special tips that are needed when working with Shared Datasets to keep them performing as well as an embedded dataset?

Is bad performance normal for shared datasets?

I was hoping to use a shared dataset as we have several reports that work with the same data and it seemed like a sensible idea to have a single dataset to edit from a maintenance and troubleshooting perspective plus being able to cahce the data from a performance perspective as these reports link through to each other.

Based on what I am seeing so far it seems like Shared Datasets are far from the Nirvana they seemed to be on paper as the performance is so bad in comparrison even when pulling live data.

Thanks in advance for any pointers that could help

Darren
